In addition, Facebook and the likes undermine civil discourse, critical thinking and ultimately our democracy. Beyond the question of whether we agree or disagree with McNamee’s indictment of (primarily) Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg, this book raises fundamental questions about some of the mechanisms that drive the adoption of technologies, new platforms and devices, and their unintended effects.Īccording to McNamee, Facebook is the epitome of the perverse effects of “persuasive technologies,” a puppet master that creates new habits, new addictions, manipulates users through “dark patterns” and transforms them into becoming passive consumers. I’m glad, though, that I finally did read it. ![]() Like many people, I had heard so much about Roger McNamee’s book, Zucked, Waking Up to the Facebook Catastrophe that I thought it somewhat unnecessary to read it-all the more so because I was growing exhausted by incessant criticism of Facebook from all sources. ![]()
